BUILT ON TRADITION SINCE the 1950s

Kiesewetter Angus is a family operation built on generations of passion for the Angus breed. Our story began in the early 1950s when our family's first Angus heifer was purchased from legendary breeder J.C. McLean of Quincy, Illinois. That early investment sparked a lifelong commitment to raising quality Angus cattle and laid the foundation for what would become Kiesewetter Angus.

In 1970, Ed and Alice Kiesewetter established Kiesewetter Angus in west-central Illinois, where our family continues to raise cattle today. Over the years, multiple generations of the Kiesewetter family have remained actively involved in the operation, sharing a commitment to responsible stewardship, continuous improvement, and producing cattle that work for commercial and seedstock producers alike.

We believe lasting success is built through consistency—not chasing trends. Every breeding decision is made with the goal of producing practical, balanced cattle that excel in fertility, longevity, structural soundness, and maternal strength. Those principles have guided our program for decades and continue to shape the genetics we offer today.

In 2020, we partnered with Bear Mountain Angus in Palisade, Nebraska, to market our bulls and females. Our shared commitment to balanced, practical genetics and customer success has created a partnership that strengthens both programs. By combining proven bloodlines and complementary breeding philosophies, we're able to offer consistent, high-quality genetics backed by generations of experience.

Whether you're purchasing your first Kiesewetter Angus bull or have been a customer for years, our goal remains the same: to provide dependable genetics, honest relationships, and cattle that deliver value long after sale day.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Optimums, Not Maximums | Balanced & Maternal

Optimums, Not Maximums
At Kiesewetter Angus, we don't believe the best cattle are created by chasing the highest number for every trait. Instead, we believe in selecting for the optimum combination of traits that allow cattle to thrive in the environments where they live and work.

Every trait comes with tradeoffs. Selecting for extreme milk production can reduce fertility and increase nutritional requirements. Pushing marbling to the extreme can sacrifice muscle expression. Generations of selecting only for calving ease may produce smaller calves, but it can also reduce growth and limit the long-term productivity of replacement females.

Rather than breeding for extremes, we focus on balance. Our goal is to produce cows that maintain body condition, breed back consistently, raise heavy calves, and remain productive for many years. We believe cattle should work with their environment—not fight against it.

While some traits, such as foot quality, udder structure, and longevity, can be aggressively selected without creating negative consequences, most economically important traits require balance. That's why every mating decision begins with one question: Will this create a better, more functional cow?

Balanced & Maternal
We believe Angus cattle were designed to be exceptional maternal cows while producing the highest-quality beef in the world. Our responsibility as breeders is to preserve and strengthen those natural advantages—not sacrifice them in pursuit of single-trait extremes.
Maternal excellence goes far beyond a pedigree or an EPD. It means fertility, structural integrity, sound feet and udders, fleshing ability, longevity, and the instinct to consistently raise a healthy, vigorous calf. Above all, we believe fertility is the foundation of every profitable cow herd.

Our breeding program emphasizes cattle that are moderate, efficient, and productive—females that remain in the herd, bulls that sire practical replacements, and genetics that create long-term profitability rather than short-term trends.

At the end of the day, our philosophy is simple:
Balanced cattle make better cows. Better cows build better herds.
